Headlines title card in newspaper type: A daily history game, HEADLINES, Guess the year, 5 real headlines a day, above a slider from 1900 to 2026

Headlines is a free daily history game in the browser. Each edition has five headlines about real events, without their dates; you drag a slider to the year you think each appeared. A spot-on guess scores 100, and every year you are off costs 2 points.

About Headlines

Headlines is a guess-the-year game built on old newspaper headlines. Each day's edition has five of them, about real events, shown with only their words and no date. You read each one and drag a slider, running from 1900 to 2026, to the year you think it appeared.

Scoring is simple: a guess in the exact year scores 100, and you lose 2 points for every year you are off. Over five headlines that rewards a feel for the decades as much as knowing exact dates, and clues hide in the wording, the people named and the technology mentioned.

Fresh headlines arrive at midnight and every player gets the same edition, dated on the home page with a countdown to the next one. It is free, needs no sign-up, and there is a page to browse past headlines.

How to play Headlines

  1. Open Headlines and press Play today's edition.
  2. Read the first headline; it has no date, only the words.
  3. Drag the slider to the year you think it appeared.
  4. Score 100 for the exact year, minus 2 points for each year you are off.
  5. Do the same for all five headlines and come back after midnight for the next edition.

Tips

  • Look for names of leaders, companies and gadgets: they narrow the decade quickly.
  • The wording itself dates a headline; older papers used different phrasing.
  • When unsure, aim for the middle of the decade you suspect to limit the points lost.
