A Gochizu round: a photo of a bowl of buffalo wings beside the written clues, with the dish's name and ingredients blurred and the box to type a country

Gochizu is a daily food geography game. Each day brings five dishes, each shown in a photo with a few written clues, and you guess the country or region each one comes from. After every round you learn the dish's name, its ingredients and where it started, so a game is also a short lesson in the world's cooking.

About Gochizu

Gochizu (written ゴチ図 in Japanese) is a browser game about where food comes from. Every day it serves the same five dishes to everyone. A round opens with a photo of the dish and a few lines of clues about how it is made and where people eat it, while the dish's name and its ingredients stay blurred.

You answer by typing a country or picking it on a world map. A wrong guess is marked correct, near or far, tells you whether you share a border, and points roughly toward the answer; more of the dish is revealed as you go, and the round ends at your final guess. Points add up over the five rounds, and the results screen recaps each dish with its name, region, ingredients and a cultural note or a common misconception.

The daily game plays without an account, and you can share your result. With an account you can record your score on a friends leaderboard, leave comments for friends and save dishes you liked. Yesterday's game is a tap away, and a calendar of past days is opened by a one-time VIP purchase, which also adds a profile badge and more statistics; there is no subscription.

Compared with other dish-guessing games such as FoodGuessr or Tastedle, Gochizu gives you written clues alongside the photo and shows direction and distance after a miss, so a guess you are unsure of still teaches you something. It can be played in thirteen languages, Japanese and English among them, and it suits anyone who likes geography quizzes or cooking from other countries.

Tips

  • Read the clues before you look closely at the photo: a mention of a sauce, a grain or a way of eating often narrows the region more than the picture does.
  • Use the direction shown after a miss: a near guess with the arrow pointing one way usually leaves only a few countries to check.
  • Read the cultural note and common misconception in the recap; dishes that many countries claim come up again in another form.
