FoodGuessr shows you a photo of a dish with its ingredients and a short description, and you guess where in the world it is from. The daily set has three short games: Classic, Cuisine Match and Plate-Off, plus an unlimited Quick Play mode.

About FoodGuessr

FoodGuessr works like a map guessing game, but the clue is a plate of food instead of a street view. Kotaku dates its release to the end of 2023, and the site is run by Laurence Pike under the FoodGuessr name. It is still growing: the site says the current artwork is a placeholder while an illustrator works on the official look.

In Classic you see a photo of a dish, a list of its ingredients and a description of how it is made. You pick a country or region from the list, and the closer you are, the more points you get, up to 5,000 for a dish. Wrong guesses give you hints, and after two misses the name of the dish is revealed. Regions such as Hong Kong and Taiwan count on their own, so you need to be precise.

The daily challenge strings three games together. Classic asks where a dish is from, Cuisine Match asks you to pick the dish that belongs to a given country, and Plate-Off shows two plates and asks which one players liked more. Playing all three each day builds a super streak, and signed-in players appear on a global leaderboard. Quick Play gives you five Classic rounds whenever you like.

FoodGuessr suits people who cook, travel or read menus closely. You learn something about a cuisine every round, and the ingredient list means you can reason your way to an answer even when the dish is new to you.

How to play FoodGuessr

  1. Open the Daily Challenges panel and press Play on Classic.
  2. Look at the photo and read the ingredients and description.
  3. Pick the country or region you think the dish comes from.
  4. Use the hints from a wrong guess to get closer; the dish name appears after two misses.
  5. Move on to Cuisine Match and Plate-Off to finish the day's set.

Tips

  • Read the ingredient list before the photo; spices and staple grains often point to a region.
  • Optional ingredients are often local touches that narrow it down further.
  • Remember that some regions, such as Hong Kong and Taiwan, are separate answers from their larger neighbours.
  • Play Quick Play between dailies to see more dishes; the same cuisines come up again.
  • In Plate-Off, think about which dish is known worldwide rather than which you like.
