Flat Heroes is an action platformer by Parallel Circles. Each level is a single screen framed by coloured walls, and you are a small square with four moves: run, jump, dash and attack. Lines, missiles, spinning blades and swarms of shapes fill the arena, and the job is to stay alive until the level ends. The look is flat and spare, with bold colours and bursts of particles when things explode.

The campaign has more than 300 levels and ten final bosses. Survival mode is where the score chasing lives: unlimited survival levels with leaderboards, and a daily challenge that gives everyone the same survival run for the day. The game also records short GIFs of your best survival moments.

Up to four players can share a screen, dropping in and out of the campaign or the challenge modes, and there are versus modes for playing against each other. Nintendo Life noted that the Switch version has no online play, so multiplayer is local. It came out of early access on Steam in 2018 and is also sold on Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox.

It suits players who like short, hard arcade runs and want one fixed challenge a day to measure themselves against others.

How to play Flat Heroes

1. Buy and install Flat Heroes on Steam, Switch, PlayStation or Xbox.
2. Open survival mode and pick the daily challenge.
3. Move with the stick or keys, jump, cling to walls and dash through gaps to dodge everything in the arena.
4. Stay alive as long as you can; the run ends when you are hit.
5. Check your score on the day's leaderboard.

• Learn the dash in the campaign first: it is how you get out of tight spots.
