EraGuessr

Look around a historical scene, then guess where on Earth and when in history it is.

Every day: A new daily set of historical scenes, the same for every player worldwide: look around each 360-degree scene, then pin where on Earth it is and slide to the year, scored on both. New puzzle: 00:00 UTC, stated on the daily page.

The EraGuessr daily share image

EraGuessr is a GeoGuessr-style daily with a time axis. Each daily round drops you into a 360-degree scene from a moment in history; you place a pin on the map and pick a year, and score up to 10,000 points, half for the place and half for the year.

About EraGuessr

EraGuessr adds history to the place-guessing format. Instead of a street photo, each round is a 360-degree panorama of a moment in the past, from the Bronze Age to the twentieth century, which you can turn to look around. You then guess two things: where it is, by dropping a pin on a world map, and when, by moving a year slider.

Each round is worth up to 10,000 points: up to 5,000 for how close your pin is and up to 5,000 for how close your year is, with forgiving bands so a near miss still scores. In the daily challenge each round has a 90-second limit. The scenes are generated images rather than photographs, which is how the game can show periods no camera recorded.

The daily is the same for every player worldwide and changes at 00:00 UTC. After playing you see a global leaderboard, and a streak counts the days in a row you have played, saved in your browser with no account needed. Past dailies cannot be replayed for free.

The daily and a solo mode are free. An optional EraGuessr+ subscription adds the full scene library, filters by era, place and theme, the archive of past dailies and more; there are also party and one-on-one multiplayer modes. The site runs in several languages, including English, Spanish, German and Chinese.

How to play EraGuessr

  1. Open the EraGuessr daily and look around the first scene by dragging the view.
  2. Look for clues in buildings, clothing, tools and landscape.
  3. Drop a pin on the world map where you think the scene is.
  4. Move the year slider to when you think it is set, and submit before the 90 seconds run out.
  5. See your score for place and year, then play the remaining rounds and check the leaderboard.

Tips

  • Settle the rough era first from clothing and technology; it narrows the map a lot.
  • Architecture and writing systems on signs often give away the region.
  • A guess in the right century still scores well, so do not run the clock down chasing an exact year.
