Dave's Word Game: a five by five board of blue and orange letter tiles with some cleared, a score of 34 and the word GILD being played

Dave's Word Game, DWG to its players, is a daily word puzzle for iPhone and Android from the London studio Bearwaves. Everyone gets the same board of letters each day, and the words you play clear tiles and change what is left, so the order matters. Daily and monthly leaderboards rank the scores.

About Dave's Word Game

Dave's Word Game is about more than finding words. Each day brings one five by five board of letter tiles, the same for every player. You spell a word from the letters on the board, play it, and score; the letters you used are cleared, which leaves gaps and changes the words you can still make. The listing puts it plainly: clear things too early and you can lock yourself out of a high score, so the game rewards looking ahead.

Because the board is shared, scores can be compared directly. You may play the day's board as many times as you like, chasing the top of the daily leaderboard, and regular play counts toward a monthly leaderboard whose winners are kept on record.

The daily puzzle is free and the listing promises no ads. The game is made by Bearwaves, an independent studio founded in 2012 and based in London, whose earlier game is the strategy title Feud. It came out on the App Store in December 2025 and is also on Google Play; the studio says a PC release will follow. It suits players who like planning in word games as much as vocabulary.

Tips

  • Before playing, look for the awkward letters (J, Z, W) and plan a word that uses them before they are stranded.
  • Do not spend all the vowels early; a board with no vowels left ends your scoring.
  • Use a first run to learn the board, then replay with a plan.
  • Short words that clear a single troublesome letter can open up longer words later.
