A Battleships grid with hidden ships and row and column counts, from puzzle-battleships.com

Battleships, also known as Bimaru, is the pen-and-paper version of the guessing game turned into pure logic: row and column counts and a few revealed segments tell you where every ship lies. Puzzle-battleships.com has a Special Daily Battleships shared by all players, plus 6x6 to 15x15 grids and weekly and monthly specials.

About Daily Battleships

In Battleships a fleet of ships is hidden in a grid. Each ship is a straight line of cells, the legend under the grid says how many ships of each length there are, and no two ships may touch, not even at a corner. Numbers outside the grid tell how many ship cells are in each row and column, and some ship segments are shown at the start. There is no guessing involved: the counts and the no-touching rule are enough to place every ship.

Puzzle-battleships.com's daily game is the Special Daily Battleships. Every player sees the same grid on a given date, with the date shown below it; the 2 October 2026 grid was 20 by 20, bigger than the largest standard size. Between dailies there are Easy and Hard puzzles in 6x6, 8x8, 10x10 and 15x15, weekly and monthly specials, and a Hall of Fame for the standard sizes. The site is free with ads, patrons can switch them off, and the puzzles are also in the PuzzleGym app for iPhone and Android, linked from the site. Patrons of the site can go back through the last 30 daily puzzles; everyone else plays the current day's.

It suits anyone who played the guessing game as a child and wants a version that rewards careful counting, and players who like puzzles built on row and column totals.

How to play Daily Battleships

  1. Open the Special Daily Battleships on puzzle-battleships.com; the date is printed below the grid.
  2. Check the legend under the grid for how many ships of each length you need to place.
  3. Mark ship cells and water cells so that each row and column holds the number of ship cells shown beside it.
  4. Place every ship as a straight line, and keep ships from touching each other on any side or corner.
  5. Start from the revealed segments: a ship runs on from each one in a straight line, and the cells diagonal to it are water.
  6. When the whole fleet is placed, submit the grid to check it.

Tips

  • Fill rows and columns marked 0 with water first, then any line whose remaining cells exactly match its count.
  • Every cell diagonal to a ship cell is water, so mark the corners around each ship segment as soon as you find it.
  • Place the longest ship early; only a few rows or columns have room and a large enough count for it.
  • Keep a tally of placed ships against the legend so you know which lengths are still missing.
