Five real-world numbers a day, 25 seconds each: pick a guess and a range, and tighter ranges score more.

Every day: One numbered case a day with a theme (for example 'Is the world getting better?' or 'What's on your plate?'): five questions about real-world numbers, 25 seconds each, the same for every player. Later rounds count more, up to 1,000 points. New puzzle: Midnight, US Eastern time.

A Close Enough round in tutorial mode: a sleep question with a 25-second timer, a guess of 50% on a slider, and How sure buttons from plus or minus 5 to 40

Close Enough is a daily estimation game about the real world. Each day's case has a theme and five questions about real numbers; you set a guess, then pick how sure you are, and you score only if the answer lands in your window, more for a tighter one.

About Close Enough

Close Enough posts one case a day at midnight US Eastern time, the same for everyone. Each case has a theme, such as whether the world is getting better or what is on your plate, and five questions about real-world numbers, with 25 seconds for each.

For every question you set your guess with a slider, plus and minus buttons or by typing it in, then tap how sure you are. The choices run from a tight window such as plus or minus 5 down to a wide one such as plus or minus 40, and the tighter the window the more it pays. If the true number falls inside, you score; if it misses, the round is worth nothing. Rounds 3 and 4 count double and the last counts four times, so a perfect day is 1,000 points.

Each answer you catch sends a pixel-art rocket farther out, from low orbit past the Moon and Mars. When an answer is revealed, the source is shown under it, and where a published survey asked the public the same question, a People said line shows what they guessed. The numbers come from sources such as Our World in Data, the United Nations, the World Bank and the WHO, and each case is checked by a person before it goes live.

How to play Close Enough

  1. Open closeenough.day and read today's theme on the case card, then press Start.
  2. Set your guess for the first question with the slider, the plus and minus buttons, or by typing it in.
  3. Tap how sure you are, from a tight window to a wide one, before the 25 seconds run out; that locks the answer in.
  4. See the true number, its source and what the public guessed, then go on through all five rounds and share your score.

Tips

  • Save your boldest, tightest window for a round you are sure of in the later rounds, since the last one counts four times.
  • A miss scores nothing, so when you are unsure a wider window that catches the answer beats a tight one that misses.
  • Try How to play first: the practice round shows how the slider and the confidence buttons work before the clock matters.
