Ballpark daily #16 for Oct 5: question 1 of 5 about the Salvator Mundi auction price, with a range slider set from 31.7M to 1.26B

Ballpark is a daily estimation game with five Fermi-style questions, the same for everyone. Instead of one number you give a range with two handles; if the real answer falls inside, you score up to 100 points, more for a narrower range. It also tracks your calibration, the share of your ranges that held the answer.

About Ballpark Daily

Ballpark, played at ballparkdaily.com (not to be confused with the company-guessing game of the same name), asks five questions a day whose answers are numbers nobody knows exactly: how far the Moon is from Earth, or what Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi sold for at auction in 2017. Each day's set is numbered, and the same five go to every player.

You answer with a range. Drag the two handles on a logarithmic slider, where each tick to the right is ten times bigger, or type a low and a high value. If the true answer lands inside, you score: up to 100 points for a razor-thin range, down to 5 for a huge one. A miss scores nothing, so the skill is to go as narrow as you dare and no narrower.

At the end you get a score out of 500, your streak and a calibration figure: the share of your ranges that contained the answer. The game says a good forecaster catches about four answers in five. You can share the result, download a scorecard image, challenge a friend, or look at yesterday's answers and the archive.

It suits players who like Fermi questions and want to practise being confident without being wrong.

How to play Ballpark Daily

  1. Read the question and the unit it asks for.
  2. Drag the low and high handles, or type the two values, so the real answer should land between them.
  3. Check the points the range is worth if it holds the answer, then press Lock it in.
  4. Do all five questions, then see your score out of 500 and your calibration.

Tips

  • Aim to catch about four answers in five; if you catch all five, your ranges were too wide.
  • Anchor on a number you know, such as a population or a distance, and scale from it.
  • Remember the slider is logarithmic: one tick is a factor of ten, so small moves change a lot.

Questions

How does Ballpark scoring work?

If the answer is inside your range you score up to 100 points, more the narrower the range; a miss scores 0. Five questions make 500 points a day.

When does Ballpark reset?

At midnight in your own time zone.

Is Ballpark Daily the same as Ballpark at ballparkgame.com?

No. That game is about company founding years and values; this one is five general estimation questions answered with ranges.
