Cifra question 1 of 5, How many people use the internet?, with an estimate of 5bn typed in

Cifra asks the same five questions about real-world numbers to everyone each day, from how many people use the internet to how many play padel in Spain. You type an estimate, see the sourced answer straight away, and score up to 1,000 points a question by how many times off you were. It is free in the browser, in English and Spanish.

About Cifra

Cifra is a daily estimation game by DokkodoLabs. It lives on its own site, cifragame.com, and has a page on itch.io that sends you there. Each day brings five questions about real quantities, the same for every player, with a new set at midnight US Eastern Time.

There are no options to pick from. You type a number, using shorthand such as 9m or 1.2bn if you like, and the game shows the right figure, how far off you were and the points you earned. Scoring goes by ratio rather than units, so being 10 percent off a city's population counts the same as being 10 percent off a price: a perfect answer is worth 1,000 points and a 10 percent miss 800.

The question pool holds more than 650 questions in 13 categories, among them world, money, cities, technology, gaming, food, sports, science, history, the internet, movies, music and the USA. Every answer links to a named source and states the year it is for. Daily streaks come with shields, earned every ten days, that cover a missed day, and every past puzzle stays playable in an archive without touching your streak.

It suits players who like Fermi questions and number sense more than exact recall. It is free, needs no account and plays in English or Spanish on desktop or phone.

Tips

  • Think in powers of ten first, then refine: the score depends on how many times off you are, not on the units.
  • Anchor on a figure you know, such as a country's population, and scale from it.
  • Read the unit shown beside the answer box before you type.
