Cine2Nerdle is a daily movie puzzle played on a four by four grid of clue tiles such as actors, directors, plot points and title words. You swap tiles, with fifteen swaps to spend, until five lines each describe a single film. Alongside the daily grids there are a reversed version, a review-guessing puzzle and head-to-head film linking battles.
About Cine2Nerdle
Cine2Nerdle is a film puzzle site built around a grid of sixteen tiles. In the main mode, called Original, each tile is a clue about a movie: a cast member doing something, a director, a composer, a plot point or a word from the title. The tiles start out shuffled, and the goal is to swap them around until each of the four rows and one column names a single film, five films in all. You have fifteen swaps, and lines you complete are marked in colour so you can build on what you know.
It was made by Nilanth Yogadasan, a Canadian developer and film fan who first made CineNerdle, a game where you flip tiles to reveal a hidden movie. Cine2Nerdle followed in late 2022 as a redesign of that idea, with the aim that you do not need to know all five films to solve the grid: you can work out the last ones from the tiles left over. The two games have since been merged under the CineNerdle name, and the old cinenerdle2.app address now points players to cinenerdle.app.
Every day there is a new numbered Original grid, plus a Reversal grid in which the sixteen tiles are film titles and you sort them into five hidden themes, such as films by one director or with one actor. A Critical puzzle asks you to name a movie from its reviews and figures. The site also runs a Logical mode, where tiles have to be arranged to satisfy a set of rules, and Assemble, where you combine criteria cards and name films that fit as many of them as possible. Many grids are written by players and accepted into the daily rotation, and an archive of past and community puzzles can be replayed.
The other half of the site is Battle: you and an opponent take turns naming films that connect to the previous one through a shared actor or crew member, starting from the day's set of starter films. There are ranked battles, battle royales, custom lobbies and live trivia events. Battles need a free account with a verified email. The puzzles are free with ads, and an optional Cine-Nerd membership removes ads and adds some extras. It suits film fans who like logic puzzles more than straight recall.
How to play Cine2Nerdle
- Open the day's Original puzzle at cinenerdle.app.
- Read the sixteen clue tiles and look for ones that belong to the same film, such as an actor and a plot point.
- Swap two tiles to move a clue into a line; each swap uses one of your fifteen.
- Keep swapping until each of the four rows and the one column that also forms a film describe one film each.
- Use the leftover tiles to work out films you did not recognise at first, then share your result.
- Try the Reversal and Critical puzzles for the same day, or queue for a battle.
Tips
- Start with director and composer tiles: they usually point to one film with less doubt than an actor.
- Remember that one column also names a film, so a tile in the first position has to fit two films at once.
- Do not spend swaps on guesses early; settle the lines you are sure of and let the rest narrow down.
- In battles, pick links through prolific character actors so you have many films to fall back on.
