Today's Brainblox wall

Brainblox Game #53: an empty six by six wooden box, a gallery of eight coloured blox and the three rules for the day

Brainblox is a free browser puzzle in which you fill a six by six box with eight painted wooden blox. Each day's numbered wall comes with three rules about how the pieces lie and what they touch, plus a standing rule that no two blox of the same colour may touch. Everyone gets the same wall, with three lives and a result to share.

About Brainblox

Brainblox is a daily placement puzzle played in the browser. On the left is an empty wooden box, six units by six; on the right is a gallery of eight blox in four colours and several sizes, from a six by one plank to small one by two pieces. You pick a blox, tap the box to place it, and double-tap to turn it.

The day's wall comes with three numbered rules, such as which blox lie flat and which stand upright, which sides of the red blox may touch anything, and which pieces must touch each other. One rule applies every day: no two blox of the same colour may touch, not even at a corner. When the box is full you check it against the rules. If you are stuck you can reveal one or two blox of the solution, and each reveal costs one of your three lives.

Each wall has a game number and is the same for every player that day. The home page also offers a timed version of the same wall, where after three minutes a piece of the answer is revealed every three minutes and your stars drop, a daily code-breaking game called Blox in the Box, a practice mode, a streak counter and a group score table.

How to play Brainblox

  1. Open today's wall and read the three rules and the always rule.
  2. Pick a blox from the gallery and tap the box to place it; double-tap a blox to rotate it.
  3. Work out which pieces must lie flat or stand upright and which must touch, and place the others around them.
  4. Fill all 36 units of the box so that no two blox of the same colour touch.
  5. Check the wall, and if you are stuck, reveal a blox at the cost of one life.

Tips

  • Start with the largest blox: the six by one plank only fits along a full row or column.
  • Rules about which sides of a piece may touch anything often push that piece into a corner of the box.
  • Remember that corner contact counts, so blox of one colour need a clear gap between them.
