Gridle

Wordle with shapes: guess how polyominoes pack a 4x4 grid in six tries.

Every day: One numbered packing a day (the developer refers to puzzle #1642 in 2026), drawn from a fixed list of all possible solutions by a daily seed: guess how polyomino pieces fill a 4x4 grid in six tries. New puzzle: Once a day (exact time not stated).

Gridle board: rows of 4x4 guess grids, with buttons for polyomino pieces, rotate, flip, Go and Show answer

Gridle swaps Wordle's words for shapes. The daily answer is a packing of a 4x4 grid with polyomino pieces, and each of your six guesses must itself be a valid packing. After each guess, the tiles change colour to show how close you were.

About Gridle

Gridle is a small browser game by Notan on itch.io, inspired by Wordle and Nerdle. Instead of a five-letter word, the hidden answer is a way of dividing a 4x4 grid into polyomino pieces, shapes made of squares joined edge to edge. You build each guess by placing pieces from a palette of shapes, rotating and flipping them as needed, until the grid is filled, then press Go.

The colours on your guess tell you how close you are to the hidden packing, and you have six tries. A colour-blind mode was added in an update, and there is a share button for your result.

All possible solutions are precomputed into a list, and each day's puzzle is picked from it with a numbered daily seed, so everyone gets the same one. The developer described this in a 2026 update that fixed a rare bug in the random index. It suits Wordle fans who enjoy spatial thinking and tangram-style shapes.

How to play Gridle

  1. Choose pieces from the palette and place them on the 4x4 grid; rotate or flip them as needed.
  2. Fill the whole grid to make a valid packing.
  3. Press Go to submit your guess.
  4. Read the tile colours to see how close your packing is to the answer.
  5. Find the hidden packing within six tries and share your result.

Tips

  • Start with a guess that uses several different shapes to learn which ones are in the answer.
  • Watch the corners; pieces there have fewer possible positions.
  • Keep track of which shapes have been ruled out.
  • Turn on colour-blind mode if the feedback colours are hard to read.
