Bordlr Daily #1, Portugal to Vietnam, par 7: a dark world map with a route of highlighted countries running from Portugal across Russia and China to Vietnam

Bordlr is a daily geography puzzle about the places in between. You get two countries, or two US states, and name neighbouring regions one at a time until your route links them by land, scored out of 200 for using few regions and for keeping the route short.

About Bordlr

Bordlr is a free browser geography game by shwrk, played at bordlr.com and on itch.io. Each puzzle shows two targets on a world map, for example Portugal and Vietnam, along with a par. Your job is to join them with a chain of regions that border each other.

You type any country that borders one of the two targets or a region already on your route, and accepted guesses light up on the map, so the chain can grow from both ends until they meet. Only real land borders count, plus three fixed crossings: the Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden, the King Fahd Causeway between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and the Johor to Singapore causeway. There are no ferries and no ocean hops, which is why island nations never appear inside a chain.

Each solve earns up to 100 points for using as few regions as the shortest possible chain and up to 100 for matching the shortest real-world distance, measured between region centres, for a total out of 200. The two do not always agree: a route through a few large countries can cover more kilometres than one through several small ones.

The daily puzzle is numbered and the same for everyone. It changes at midnight local time, with world countries on most days and a US-states board every third day. Practice mode gives unlimited extra puzzles on either board, results can be shared as an emoji grid, and the site has a country borders atlas for study. It suits people who like map trivia and want something more strategic than naming a single country.

Tips

  • Work from both ends; the chain does not have to grow from one side.
  • Big transit countries such as Russia, China, Brazil or Sudan close large gaps in one guess but can cost you on distance.
  • Learn the choke points: Panama and Colombia are the only land link between the Americas, and Egypt and Israel join Africa to Asia.
  • Ferries do not count, so an island country can only be on a route through one of the three fixed crossings, as Singapore and Bahrain are.
