Venn is a free daily logic puzzle from Mind Loft. Three overlapping circles each stand for a plain property of a word, and twelve words must be sorted so every one of the seven regions is filled. Each region shows how many words belong in it, which turns sorting into deduction.

About Venn (Mind Loft)

Venn is a sorting puzzle on Mind Loft, a free site of daily browser games. The sheet shows three overlapping circles, each one a plain property a word can have, and a tray of twelve words. Between them, the words fill every one of the seven regions of the diagram, including the small centre where all three properties are true at once.

The counts are what make it a deduction puzzle. Each region tells you how many words belong in it, so a word in the wrong place is not just a wrong answer, it leaves a count that refuses to add up. Working out where the numbers fall short shows you which words to move.

On the day we looked every item was a chemical element, and the circles were: is radioactive, has exactly six letters, and contains no letter C, with words such as francium, helium, radon and oxygen in the tray. The sheet starts face down and is turned over when you begin, and you file the sheet when every word is placed. A new sheet goes up at midnight US Eastern Time, and on Sundays two of the counts are withheld.

Mind Loft pairs it with Axiom (a hidden-rule puzzle), Bracket and Links (four hidden threads). It suits players who like Vennections or Common 3 and want the region counts as an extra lever.

  5. Fix any region whose count does not add up until the whole sheet fits.

Tips

  • Start with the centre region: few words have all three properties.
  • Every word has at least one of the three properties, since the seven regions all sit inside the circles.
  • When a count is short, look for a word that has one more property than you thought.
  • On Sundays two counts are hidden; work them out from the others.
