Dictionary Puzzle

A Dictionary Puzzle card: the word borborygmus with four possible definitions

Dictionary Puzzle is the parlour game Fictionary as a one-minute daily puzzle. Each day shows an obscure English word with four possible definitions; three are bluffs, and you pick the real one.

About Dictionary Puzzle

Dictionary Puzzle takes the old game of bluffing definitions and makes it a daily habit. Each day there is one rare English word, the same for everyone, shown with its part of speech and four definitions. One example was borborygmus, a noun, offered as a pompous orator, the rumbling of gas in the intestines, an underground labyrinth or the lowest note on an organ.

Three of the four are invented, and only one is in the dictionary. You read them, weigh which sounds right, and choose. It takes about a minute, and you learn a strange word either way.

It suits word lovers, crossword solvers and anyone who enjoys guessing from roots and sounds.

How to play Dictionary Puzzle

  1. Read the day's word and its part of speech.
  2. Read the four definitions.
  3. Pick the one you think is real.
  4. See the answer and learn the word.

Tips

  • Look at the word's roots: Greek and Latin pieces often hint at meaning.
  • Bluffs are often plausible but too neat; real definitions can be oddly specific.
  • Say the word aloud; some words sound like what they mean.
