Sudoku a Day is an iPhone app built around a single classic sudoku each day. You pick a difficulty from Easy to Master, solve today's dated grid, keep your streak and compare with friends through Game Center. It is free with no ads; Pro adds past puzzles and extra hints.

About Sudoku a Day

Sudoku a Day comes from Ocho and reached the App Store in March 2025. Its idea is to strip a sudoku app down to the daily ritual: no endless lists of puzzles and no ads, just today's board, opened with your morning coffee and finished before you get on with the day.

Each morning brings a fresh dated grid, and you choose the difficulty you want to play it at, Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert or Master. The board itself is the classic 9x9: fill every row, column and 3x3 box with the digits 1 to 9. Notes, smart cells, a hint button and settings such as a time or mistake limit let you play it your way, and you can share the day's puzzle with friends and family.

Around the puzzle there are streaks and reminders, home and lock screen widgets with your statistics, dark mode and emoji or colour themes in place of digits, and Game Center, where friends compare scores and streaks. The game's website, sudokuaday.com, adds strategy guides and free printable PDFs of the puzzles.

The app is free and shows no ads. Pro unlocks the archive of past puzzles and extra hints. It suits anyone who wants one good sudoku a day rather than a hundred.

How to play Sudoku a Day

  1. Open the app to see today's dated puzzle and pick a difficulty.
  2. Fill each empty square with a digit from 1 to 9.
  3. Make sure no digit repeats in any row, column or 3x3 box.
  4. Use notes to keep track of the candidates in a square when you are unsure.
  5. Finish the grid to keep your streak and see your time against friends in Game Center.

Tips

  • Look for a digit that already appears in two of the three boxes in a band: the third box often has only one place left for it.
  • Turn on notes once the easy singles run out, and clear candidates as soon as you place a digit.
  • If your streak matters more than speed, start the day at a lower difficulty and move up once it feels easy.
