Anti King Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)

A sudoku where the same digit may never sit in two cells that touch, not even diagonally.

Every day: A new dated Anti King Sudoku puzzle every day at each difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard and Tough, plus a Mixed page), the same for every player, with scores on monthly and all-time leaderboards and earlier days in the archive. New puzzle: Once a day (the site does not state the time).

How to play Anti King Sudoku on PuzzleMadness

A solved example Anti King Sudoku from PuzzleMadness's rules: a full 9x9 grid with one highlighted 7 whose eight neighbours hold no other 7

Anti King Sudoku on PuzzleMadness adds a chess king's rule to a 9x9 sudoku: no digit may appear in any of the eight cells around itself. Since rows, columns and boxes already stop most of those repeats, the new rule bites on diagonal neighbours across box borders. A new grid is posted daily from Easy to Tough.

About Anti King Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)

The normal sudoku rules apply, with 1 to 9 once in every row, column and 3x3 box. The extra rule borrows the chess king, which moves one square in any direction. In Anti King Sudoku, two cells a king's move apart may not hold the same digit, so a 7 rules out 7 from all eight cells surrounding it.

Inside a box this changes nothing, because a box never repeats a digit anyway, and the same goes for cells directly above, below or beside each other. What is new is the diagonal step across a box border: the corner of one box touches the corners of its neighbours, and those diagonal pairs must now differ. With no marks on the grid to remind you, the rule is easy to overlook, and it is often the step that breaks a stuck position.

The grid works like every sudoku on PuzzleMadness: number buttons above and below it, an eraser, and a pencil mode for candidate digits. On a keyboard, the number keys enter digits, the arrow keys move between cells, Ctrl, Shift or Alt with a number adds a pencil mark, and Delete or Backspace clears a cell.

PuzzleMadness is a free puzzle website run by Dewi, a software developer who started out making games for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii and DS and now builds the site as a hobby. It carries dozens of puzzle types, from classic sudoku to newer logic grids, and each one gets its own dated puzzle every day at each difficulty. Anti King Sudoku comes in Easy, Medium, Hard and Tough versions plus a Mixed page, and the same day's Anti King Sudoku puzzle is shared by everyone who opens it.

The site checks your grid as you go and tells you when it is finished; it does not publish solutions. Each completed puzzle earns a score, and scores feed a monthly and an all-time Anti King Sudoku leaderboard, where only your best attempt at a puzzle counts. Older days stay in the archive, so a missed puzzle can still be played later and still counts toward the current month. Playing needs no account; a free registration gives you a username on the leaderboards and a cloud save. The pages carry adverts.

  1. Open today's Anti King Sudoku page on PuzzleMadness and choose a difficulty from the menu above the grid.
  2. Click a cell and enter a digit with the number buttons above and below the grid or with the keyboard; the eraser button clears a cell.

  4. Never put the same digit in two cells that touch, including diagonally.
  5. Turn on pencil mode (the pencil button, or Ctrl, Shift or Alt with a number key) to jot candidate digits in a cell.

Tips

  • Only diagonal neighbours across box borders are new constraints, so check box corners and edges first.
  • When a digit has two spots left in a box, see whether one of them touches the same digit diagonally in the next box.
  • Combine this with the knight-move rule from Anti Knight Sudoku if you play both: the king rule covers the eight closest cells only.
  • Missed a day? Earlier puzzles are in the archive, and finishing one still counts toward this month's leaderboard.

Questions

What does the king rule add to sudoku?

Two cells that touch, even at a corner, cannot hold the same digit. In practice this only adds new limits for diagonal neighbours in different boxes.

When does a new Anti King Sudoku puzzle appear?

Once a day: each difficulty gets its own dated puzzle. PuzzleMadness does not state the exact changeover time.

Where can I see the solution?

PuzzleMadness does not publish solutions. The page tells you when your grid is correct and finished, or when you have made a mistake.

Is Anti King Sudoku on PuzzleMadness free?

Yes. It is free to play in a browser with adverts on the page, and registering for the leaderboards is free too.
