Apple News+ includes a set of three new sudokus every day: easy, moderate and challenging. Easy grids have more givens, while the challenging one needs more advanced techniques. Your solve time for each daily grid can go onto a Game Center leaderboard for that difficulty.
About Apple News+ Sudoku
Sudoku is one of the puzzle types in the Puzzles section of Apple's News app, alongside the Crossword, Crossword Mini, Quartiles and the Emoji Game. Apple News+ subscribers get new sudokus every day in three difficulties, and earlier days stay available in the archive. Apple says some puzzles may be playable without a subscription.
The rules are the classic ones: fill the 9x9 grid so that 1 to 9 appear once in every row, column and 3x3 block. Easy puzzles give you more starting numbers; challenging puzzles give fewer and need techniques beyond simple elimination. The app has pencil marks, Autocheck and reveal tools, plus a built-in How to Play tutorial.
To keep a sudoku streak going, you need to solve at least one of the current day's sudokus, at any difficulty, without revealing answers. With Game Center turned on for News, your time on each daily grid goes to a leaderboard for that difficulty, where you can compare it with friends and other solvers and look back at the previous day's board.
It suits Apple News+ subscribers who want a short number puzzle each day, with a choice of level depending on how much time they have.
How to play Apple News+ Sudoku
- Open the News app, go to Puzzles and tap Sudoku, then pick easy, moderate or challenging.
- Tap an empty square and enter a number from 1 to 9.
- Make sure each number appears only once in every row, column and 3x3 block.
- Use notes for candidates, and Autocheck if you want mistakes flagged.
- Complete at least one of today's grids without revealing to keep your streak.
Tips
- Start with the easy grid to warm up; it has the most givens.
- Scan each block for numbers that can only go in one square before using notes.
- On the challenging grid, fill in candidates early so you can spot pairs and other patterns.
- Avoid Reveal if you care about streaks: any reveal stops the puzzle counting.
