About Not Evil Sudoku

Not Evil Sudoku is a plain 9x9 sudoku app built natively for iPhone and iPad. Its name sums up its pitch: no adverts, no tracking and no clutter, and it works offline.

It is made by Ashish Selvaraj and has been on the App Store since 2022.

The free part of the app is the daily puzzle: one grid a day at the difficulty you choose, with leaderboards that show how your solve stacks up against players across the globe, and a note of how many assists you used. A streak counter and optional reminders help you keep the habit. Pro, a one-time purchase, adds unlimited games, charts of your solving speed, extra themes and app icons.

The tools are aimed at learning: shake the phone for a hint that points to the next logical move, turn on move-by-move checking, keep candidate notes that clear themselves, and highlight every copy of a digit. There is also a mode that swaps the digits for letters. It suits sudoku players who want one tidy daily grid and a fair time to compare.

How to play Not Evil Sudoku

  1. Open Not Evil Sudoku and pick today's puzzle at easy, medium or hard.
  2. Tap an empty cell, then tap a digit to place it.
  3. Make each row, column and 3x3 box contain 1 to 9 exactly once.
  4. Switch on Notes to pencil in candidates, or shake the phone for a hint.
  5. Finish the grid to log your time on the leaderboard and keep your streak.

Tips

  • Tap a digit to highlight all its copies; gaps in rows and boxes jump out.
  • Use auto-clearing notes so outdated candidates do not mislead you.
  • Hints are counted on the leaderboard, so try a full scan of the grid before shaking.
