Spotle Movies, the daily movie guessing game

Spotle Movies is a daily movie guessing game. You type any film from a list of over 3,000, and eight clue tiles flip to show how it compares with the answer: genres, year, box office, critic score, rating, studio, director and lead actor. Green is exact, gold is close, and arrows point higher or lower; you have ten tries.

About Spotle Movies

Spotle Movies takes the attribute-matching style of the music game Spotle and applies it to films. Each day has one dated film, the same for everyone.

You search from over 3,000 titles and pick one. Eight tiles flip in turn. The genres light up one by one when they match. Year, worldwide gross and score show an arrow when the answer is higher or lower. Rating, studio, director and lead actor are a match or not. Green means exact, gold means close and grey means no match.

With ten guesses, you can afford a few probes: a big studio blockbuster from the middle of the range tells you a lot about where the answer sits. The director and lead actor tiles are the ones that close it out.

It suits players of Spotle and the character -dles who like narrowing down a field with each guess, and film fans who know box office and studios as well as stars.

Tips

  • Open with a mid-2000s studio hit; its year, gross and score sit near the middle and the arrows tell you the most.
  • Pin the studio early: it cuts the list of possible films sharply.
  • Use genre matches to choose between films with similar numbers.
  • Save the director and lead actor guesses for when you are down to a few films.
