About Somali Wordle

Somali Wordle translates Wordle into af-Soomaali. Its About panel, Waxaan waa maxay?, says it is the well-known game Wordle changed into Somali, with most of its code taken from Hannah Park's open-source Wordle clone. The rules panel, Sida loo ciyaaro, is in Somali too: six tries to name the hidden word, with the boxes changing colour after each one.

The board is four tiles wide rather than five. The keyboard follows the Somali Latin alphabet, so the letter pairs Dh, Kh and Sh are single keys and fill a single tile, which lets words such as dhowr fit in four. You press GALI to enter a guess and TIR to delete. A tile turns green when the letter is in the right place, yellow when it is in the word but elsewhere, and grey when it is not in the word.

The answer is picked by counting days from 1 January 2022, so everyone gets the same word on the same date, and a countdown shows the time to the next one, which comes at midnight in your own time zone. Statistics and a dark mode are included, and it runs in the browser with no account.

How to play Somali Wordle

1. Open Somali Wordle and type a Somali word that fills the four tiles; dh, kh and sh each take one tile.
2. Press GALI to submit it, or TIR to delete a letter.
3. Read the tiles: green is the right letter in the right place, yellow is in the word elsewhere, grey is not in the word.
4. Use those clues in your next guess.
5. Find the word in six tries or fewer.

Tips

• Use the Dh, Kh and Sh keys for those sounds; typing d and h separately takes two tiles.
• Somali uses many doubled vowels such as aa and ee, so a repeated letter is often worth trying.
• Short common words such as laba, kala and wada make good openers.
