A Palavra is the word-guessing game in Folha de S.Paulo's games section. Each day there is one five-letter Portuguese word, and every guess is coloured to show which letters are right, misplaced or absent. Full access to Folha Jogos is sold as part of a Folha subscription.

About A Palavra (Folha de S.Paulo)

A Palavra sits on the Folha Jogos page of the Brazilian daily Folha de S.Paulo, beside the paper's crossword (Palavras Cruzadas), sudokus, a spot-the-difference game and a news quiz. The games are supplied by Mind Training, which credits itself at the foot of the games page.

Each puzzle is a single five-letter Portuguese word with a publication date. The word for 1 October 2026 was different from the one for 2 October, and the game server hands the same word and the same overall results chart to everyone who opens it on a given day. You get six attempts, and after each one the tiles change colour to show which letters are in the right place, which are in the word but elsewhere, and which are not in it.

When you finish, the game shows how many tries you needed alongside the share of all players who solved it on each attempt, and it keeps your current and best streak. Folha places its games behind its paywall: the paper's subscription page for games promises unlimited access to all the games for subscribers, so expect to log in or subscribe to play regularly.

It suits Portuguese speakers and learners who already enjoy Wordle-type games and want one tied to a Brazilian newspaper's daily routine.

How to play A Palavra (Folha de S.Paulo)

  1. Open Folha Jogos and pick A Palavra (log in with your Folha account if asked).
  2. Type any valid five-letter Portuguese word and press Enter.
  3. Read the colours: one shade for a letter in the right spot, another for a letter elsewhere in the word, grey for letters not in it.
  4. Use those clues for your next guess; you have six tries in total.
  5. After solving, compare your number of tries with the chart of how all players did that day.

Tips

  • Start with a word full of common Portuguese letters such as A, E, O, R and S.
  • Remember that Portuguese words often end in A, O or S, which narrows the last position quickly.
  • Do not reuse grey letters; each guess should test new letters where possible.
  • Play every day if you care about the streak counter, since a missed day resets it.
