AbraPalavra (Observador)

Guess the Portuguese word of the day in six tries.

Every day: One five-letter Portuguese word a day, the same for every player, with six guesses and a countdown to the next word. New puzzle: 1 a.m. on your device's clock: the game's code subtracts one hour from local time before working out the day's word.

AbraPalavra is the Portuguese newspaper Observador's take on Wordle: one five-letter word a day in Portuguese, six guesses, and coloured letters that tell you how close each guess was. It keeps your streak and success rate, and a countdown shows when the next word arrives.

About AbraPalavra (Observador)

AbraPalavra sits in the games section of Observador, the Lisbon online newspaper, next to its Sudoku and SudoCrime. It is a Wordle-style game in Portuguese: there is one hidden five-letter word each day, the same for everyone, and you have six tries to find it.

After each guess the letters change colour to show which are in the word and in the right place, which are in the word but elsewhere, and which are not in it at all. When you finish, the end screen gives the word, how many tries you took, and your statistics: games played, success rate and current streak. A clock counts down to the next word.

It suits Portuguese speakers and learners who want a daily word puzzle in their own language. It runs in the browser on the newspaper's site, with the paper's usual ads around it.

How to play AbraPalavra (Observador)

  1. Open AbraPalavra on Observador's games page.
  2. Type any five-letter Portuguese word and press enter.
  3. Read the colours: letters in the right place, letters in the word but elsewhere, and letters not in the word.
  4. Use those clues to narrow down your next guess, up to six guesses in all.
  5. When you find the word or run out of tries, check your stats and wait for the countdown to reach the next word.

Tips

  • Start with a word full of common Portuguese vowels and consonants, such as A, E, O, R and S.
  • Remember that a letter can appear twice in the answer.
  • Accents are not typed, so think of the word without them.
