Wordle auf Deutsch from the Süddeutsche Zeitung

Wordle auf Deutsch is the official German edition of Wordle, published by the Süddeutsche Zeitung under licence from The New York Times since December 2025. The rules are the original's: one five-letter word a day, six tries, coloured tiles after each guess. Today's puzzle is free on SZ.de; the archive is for digital subscribers.

About Wordle auf Deutsch (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

Wordle auf Deutsch is the first licensed foreign-language edition of Wordle. The Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Munich daily, launched it at the start of December 2025 as the New York Times' first international licensee for the game, and it sits in the SZ puzzle section beside the paper's own Buchstabenring, sudoku and crossword.

The game plays exactly like the English original. There is one hidden five-letter word each day, dated and the same for everyone. You type a German word; green tiles are letters in the right place, yellow tiles are in the word but elsewhere, grey tiles are not in it. You have six tries.

The word list follows the Duden. Umlauts are allowed as letters of their own, and ß is written as ss, which changes how some words fit into five letters.

The day's puzzle is free on SZ.de. Digital subscribers can also play past days from the archive. It suits German speakers who play Wordle in English and learners of German who want a daily five-letter workout.

How to play Wordle auf Deutsch (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

  1. Open Wordle auf Deutsch on SZ.de; the day's date is in the title.
  2. Type a five-letter German word and submit it.
  3. Green tiles are in the right place, yellow are in the word elsewhere, grey are not in it.
  4. Use the colours to choose your next guess.
  5. Find the word within six tries and share your result.

Tips

  • Umlauts count as their own letters, so ÄÖÜ can be green or yellow on their own.
  • ß is written as ss, so a word like Gruss fits five letters.
  • Start with a word rich in common German letters such as E, N, R, S and T.
  • German nouns are common answers, so do not rule out capitalised words.
