BingeWatcher hides the Wikipedia article of a top-grossing film and asks you to reveal its title. You type words: exact matches appear in the text, and words close in meaning show up as hints. There is a new film each day for the US, UK and French box office.
About BingeWatcher
BingeWatcher is a daily film puzzle built on a Wikipedia page with every word masked. The film is picked from the hits of a national box office: the US edition draws on films since 1948, the UK edition on films since 1968 and the French edition on films since 1946. Your goal is the title, but to get there you uncover the article around it.
Each word you submit is checked against the hidden text. An exact match is revealed everywhere it appears. A word that is close in meaning to a hidden one stays on screen near it, so you can tell that the article talks about, say, war or a ship without yet having the exact word. As you play you unlock hints that reveal an item for free, such as a cast or crew name, and you can click a sentence to swap its hidden words for related ones. There is no fixed limit on guesses.
The site is made by Kahen and uses word vectors from published research to judge how close two words are. It keeps statistics, achievements for streaks and fast wins, a history of past films and a community word cloud you can see after winning. The three editions each have their own film and their own midnight, so you can play more than one a day. It suits players who like Pedantix-style reveal puzzles and know their way around popular films.
How to play BingeWatcher
- Choose an edition: US, UK or French box office.
- Type a word and press Enter or Space to submit it.
- Exact matches are revealed in the hidden Wikipedia text; words close in meaning are shown as hints next to the hidden ones.
- Use the hints you unlock to reveal a cast or crew name or another item for free.
- Keep going until you can submit every word of the film's title.
Tips
- Start with general film words such as film, directed, starring, sequel and box office to open up the first lines.
- Watch the close-meaning hints: they tell you the theme even when the exact word is still hidden.
- Save your hints for names; a director or lead actor often points straight at the film.
- The title words are usually repeated in the article, so the first sentence is worth working on.
