Emoji Test shows you a short string of emoji each day and asks for the word it stands for, from five to twelve letters long. You get five guesses, with each letter turning blue, yellow or grey as in Wordle, and a star for every guess you have left.

About Emoji Test

Emoji Test is a daily word puzzle built on emoji. Each day's puzzle, numbered and the same for every player, is a little rebus: a few emoji whose meaning, sound or setting points to one word. The blank tiles tell you how long the word is, anywhere from five to twelve letters.

The clues come in a few kinds. Some add meanings together (a cat and a sleeping sign make CATNAP), some work by sound (a bee and a maple leaf read out loud give BELIEVE), and some ask where you would find all the things shown (parrots, snakes, palms and tigers make JUNGLE). Once you have a guess, the game colours each letter the way Wordle does, so a wrong but sensible guess still narrows the answer down.

You have five guesses and earn a star for each one you do not need. The game is played in English or Spanish, each with its own daily puzzle, and earlier puzzles can be played after the day's one. There is also a Create button for making emoji puzzles of your own to send to friends.

It suits players who like lateral thinking more than vocabulary drills: the hard part is reading the picture, and the letter colours are there to rescue you.

How to play Emoji Test

  1. Look at the day's emoji clue and count the blank tiles to see how long the answer is.
  2. Type a word of that length and press enter.
  3. Read the colours: blue is the right letter in the right place, yellow is in the word but elsewhere, grey is not in the word.
  4. Use the colours and the clue to make your next guess; you have five in all.
  5. Solve it to earn a star for every guess left over, then share your result.

Tips

  • Try saying the emoji out loud: many clues are puns on their sounds.
  • If the emoji do not make a word, ask where you would find them all together.
  • Spend an early guess on common letters you have not tried, avoiding doubles, to learn the most.
