Skywave

Read the sun and the ionosphere, pick a band and an antenna, and work ten radio stations in one day.

Every day: A new day of conditions at 00:00 UTC, worked out from the date and the same for everyone: a solar flux and K index, a home location (QTH) and ten made-up stations around the world, each with its own listening window, bands and modes. New puzzle: 00:00 UTC.

Skywave is a free daily browser game about shortwave (HF) radio propagation, played on a 3D globe. Each UTC day gives every player the same solar conditions, home location and ten made-up stations to contact. You pick a band, mode, power and antenna, watch the game clock, and call when you think the path is open.

About Skywave

Skywave is a daily puzzle from DEXM Labs, a small UK site of free browser games and simulators. It was built by Arthur, who lives in Lincolnshire, came to radio through planes and a software-defined radio, and made the game while studying for an amateur radio Foundation licence. It plays in the browser with no account, no cookies and no ads.

Each day's round is worked out from the UTC date, so everyone gets the same one. A briefing shows the solar flux, the K index, any flare watch or sporadic E, your home location and the ten stations to work, with the hours each one is listening. Then you go on air: choose one of eleven bands from 160m to 6m, FT8, CW or SSB, a power from 5 to 400 W and an antenna, aim a Yagi if you use one, and press Call. Every call costs ten minutes of game time whether it works or not, and the clock only moves forward, so waiting for a band to open is part of the plan.

A contact scores by distance, multiplied by the station's rarity, the mode and the power: low power and SSB pay more, and a grey-line contact adds a bonus. When a call fails, a hop table shows what stopped the signal, such as a frequency above the maximum usable frequency or too much D-layer absorption. Hints for the MUF, the D-layer loss or a six-hour band scope cost points you earn by finishing rounds, not your score.

The propagation model is simplified on purpose and the stations are fictional, so it is a game rather than a forecast. It suits radio amateurs and listeners who want a daily workout in reading conditions, and curious players who want to learn why some radio paths open at night and others by day. A practice mode lets you set your own solar flux, K index and date and play as often as you like without touching your streak.

How to play Skywave

  1. Press Play today's round to get the same UTC-seeded day as everyone else.
  2. Read the briefing: the solar flux, the K index, your home location and when each of the ten stations is listening.
  3. Press Go on air and pick a station from the list or the globe.
  4. Choose a band, a mode (FT8, CW or SSB), a power and an antenna that suits the distance; aim the beam if you use the Yagi.
  5. Move the clock forward with +10m, +1h or the slider until the station's window and the band are open, then press Call.
  6. If the call fails, read the hop table to see why, change your setup or wait, and try again.
  7. End the day when all ten stations are worked or the clock reaches 24:00, then copy or share your result.

Tips

  • Tuning is free and only calls cost time, so try settings before you call.
  • If the signal goes above the MUF, drop to a lower band; if D-layer absorption kills it, try a higher band or wait for the evening.
  • Low power and SSB multiply the score, so once a path is clearly open, try it at 5 W.
  • Contacts along the grey line between day and night earn a 20 percent bonus.
  • A call at 23:50 ends the day, so leave late-window stations room.

Questions

When does Skywave reset?

A new day of conditions and stations starts at 00:00 UTC, worked out from the date, so every player gets the same round.

Is Skywave free?

Yes. It plays in the browser with no account, no cookies and no ads; your progress and streak are kept in your browser.

Can I use it to plan real radio contacts?

No. The maker says the propagation is simplified on purpose and every station is made up; for real conditions use VOACAP or a live propagation map.

Can I play more than once a day?

Practice mode lets you set your own solar flux, K index and date and play as many rounds as you like. It does not count toward your daily streak.
