Today's medium SetSquare on PuzzleMadness, a grid of operation signs with a given 6 in the centre and results such as 13, 43 and 54

PuzzleMadness posts a new SetSquare puzzle every day, the same grid for every player, at several difficulty levels. Put 1 to 9 once each into the grid so each row and column calculation reaches its result, worked strictly left to right and top to bottom. Finished puzzles score points on the site's monthly and all-time leaderboards.

About SetSquare (PuzzleMadness)

SetSquare is an arithmetic grid. The digits 1 to 9 go into a 3x3 arrangement of squares, each used once, with operation signs between them. Each row and each column is a calculation with a given result. The calculations are worked in order from left to right (or top to bottom), not by the usual rules for multiplication first, which the site points out can change the answer.

The daily page opens today's puzzle on its own, and its title carries the date (on 3 October 2026 it read "Daily Medium SetSquare Puzzle for Saturday 3rd October 2026 (Medium)"). There is a separate dated puzzle for each difficulty: Easy, Medium, Hard and Mixed. Past days stay in the archive, so a missed puzzle can be played later, and there is a print version and an image download of the grid. PuzzleMadness does not publish solutions: the site tells you when you have finished a grid correctly or made a mistake. Each completed puzzle adds to your total on the SetSquare monthly and all-time leaderboards, where only your best score on any one puzzle counts.

Start with calculations that have few possibilities, such as a product that can only be made one way within 1 to 9. Then use the fact that each digit is used once to settle the rest. Depending on the level, a starting digit may be given.

PuzzleMadness is a British puzzle site with dozens of daily puzzle types in the browser, from many sudoku variants to logic grids such as Nurikabe, Hashi and Slitherlink. It is free to play and carries ads. A free account keeps track of the puzzles you have finished and puts your name on the leaderboards, and the badges next to usernames mark how many puzzles a player has completed.

Tips

  • Evaluate left to right: 8 + 3 x 5 is 55 here, not 23.
  • Large results with multiplication have few factor pairs within 1 to 9.
  • Each digit appears once, so a digit fixed in one calculation is gone from the others.

Questions

Does SetSquare use normal order of operations?

No. Calculations are done in order from left to right or top to bottom, not multiplication first.

When does the PuzzleMadness SetSquare change?

Once a day: each puzzle is dated, and the daily page opens the current day's grid. The site does not say at what time the new one appears.

Is PuzzleMadness SetSquare free?

Yes. You can play without an account; the site shows ads. A free account records which puzzles you have finished and enters your scores on the leaderboards.

Where can I find the answers?

PuzzleMadness does not publish solutions. It tells you when your grid is complete and correct, and when you have made a mistake.

Can I play earlier SetSquare puzzles?

Yes, older puzzles are in the archive, and puzzles completed on any day count toward that month's leaderboard.
