Sampledle is a daily music puzzle about sampling. You hear a snippet of an older record and try to name the well-known song built on it, mostly hip hop and pop hits. Each skip or wrong guess reveals a clue, from the genre and year to the artist and the cover, and you have five attempts.

About Sampledle

Sampledle is built for crate diggers, producers and hip hop fans. Rather than playing the song you have to name, it plays the record that song borrowed from: a soul loop, a jazz break, a disco hook or a film score. Your job is to recognise which hit flipped it.

Each day there is one puzzle for everyone, numbered by day. You get five attempts. A wrong guess or a skip does not lengthen the clip, as in Heardle; instead it opens a clue. In order, the clues show the genre, the year, the artist and finally the cover art of the song you are looking for. Guesses come from a long searchable list of songs, from A Tribe Called Quest and DJ Shadow to Timbaland, Miley Cyrus and Skrillex.

When you finish you see global statistics for the day, the answer with links, and a share text with your attempts out of five. Your streak is kept in the browser, and an archive lets you go back and play earlier days you missed.

The audio is played through SoundCloud, and the game is free, with ads. It rewards people who listen to where songs come from: if you have ever looked up what a beat was built on, you will have a head start.

How to play Sampledle

  1. Play the snippet of today's original sample.
  2. Type and pick the famous song you think sampled it.
  3. A skip or a wrong guess reveals the next clue: genre, then year, then artist, then the cover.
  4. Name the song within five attempts, then share your result or open the archive.

Tips

  • Think about who samples that kind of record: chopped soul points to some producers, disco loops to others.
  • Use the year clue to place the song in an era of hip hop or pop before guessing.
  • A skip and a wrong guess cost the same, so guess whenever you have a real candidate.
  • Play the archive to learn common sample sources; the same classic records turn up in many hits.
