Pathways

A finished Pathways grid of blue, green, red and yellow path tiles forming one continuous route, beside the words 'You found a pathway'

Pathways is a free daily tile puzzle. You get a five by five grid and a set of path tiles in four kinds, straight runs, corners, T-intersections and dead ends, and must place and rotate all of them so they cover the grid in one continuous pathway. There is an easy, a medium and a hard board each day.

About Pathways

Pathways is a quiet browser puzzle with a new pathway every day. The board is a five by five grid, which can start with some tiles already in place (four along the top row on the day checked), and below it sit stacks of path tiles in four colours, one for each kind: straight runs, corners, T-intersections and dead-end tiles.

The rules are short. Place all the available tiles to cover the whole grid in one continuous pathway. Every tile must connect to the tiles next to it, the pathway can only have one entry into the grid and one exit out of it, and you may not close a loop. You tap to select, move and place tiles, and tap again to rotate them. There is no single right answer: your pathway can differ from a friend's as long as it follows the rules.

Each day has easy, medium and hard boards, two hints, a reset button and a streak that counts the days you finish. A finished board is greeted with 'you found a pathway'. The maker also links to a Lego Ideas page proposing Pathways as a Lego set.

How to play Pathways

  1. Pick easy, medium or hard for today's pathway.
  2. Tap a tile from the stacks and place it on a blank square of the grid.
  3. Tap placed tiles to rotate them so each path joins its neighbours.
  4. Use every tile so the grid holds one continuous pathway with one entry, one exit and no loops.

Tips

  • Place the dead-end tiles early: they have to sit where the pathway can come back without closing a loop.
  • T-intersections create branches, so each one needs a dead end or a return route nearby.
  • Count the tiles of each kind against the empty squares before you start; the set always fills the grid exactly.
