Kelma is a daily word game in Maltese ("logħba tal-kliem bil-Malti"). Each day there is one five-letter Maltese word for everyone, six tries to find it, and coloured tiles after each guess. When you finish, it points you to the word in the Ġabra online lexicon.

About Kelma

Kelma, at kelma.mt, is a Maltese version of Wordle. Its description reads, in Maltese, that you guess the word in six tries, that the colour of the tiles changes after each try to show how close your word was, and that the word changes every day ("il-kelma tinbidel kuljum").

You type five-letter Maltese words, including the letters ċ, ġ, għ, ħ, ie and ż where the spelling needs them. Green, yellow and grey tiles show letters in the right place, in the word elsewhere, or not in it. The word is chosen by date, counting days from 1 January 2022, so everyone gets the same one, and it changes at midnight.

After the game Kelma links the answer to its entry in Ġabra, the Maltese lexicon run by the University of Malta's language resource project, so you can look up what the word means and how it inflects.

It suits Maltese speakers and learners who want their daily puzzle in Maltese.

How to play Kelma

  1. Open kelma.mt.
  2. Type a five-letter Maltese word and press Enter.
  3. Read the tiles: green for the right letter in the right place, yellow for the right letter elsewhere, grey for a letter not in the word.
  4. Find the word within six tries, then follow the link to look it up in Ġabra.

Tips

  • Maltese letters such as ħ, ġ and ż are separate letters from h, g and z; try them when the plain letter turns grey.
  • Many Maltese words follow Semitic root patterns; once you have two or three consonants, think of words built on that root.
  • Open with common vowels a, i and e.
