Bimaru is the daily battleship logic puzzle of the Zurich newspaper Tages-Anzeiger. Each day's grid is fixed by date, and you work out where a given fleet of ships lies using the counts of ship cells in each row and column.

About Bimaru (Tages-Anzeiger)

Bimaru, also known as Battleship solitaire, is one of the free games on the Tages-Anzeiger games page, next to Mosaik, Newsquiz, Sudoku, Wortsuche, Pinpoint, Between and Flow. The page describes it as a new challenge every day, and the puzzle service behind it delivers one scheduled grid for each date, so everyone solving that day works on the same fleet.

Above the grid you see the ships to place, from long ones down to single cells. Numbers along the edges say how many ship cells sit in each row and column, and a few cells may be revealed at the start. Ships lie in straight lines and never touch, not even diagonally. You click a cell once to mark water, twice for a ship segment, and a third time to clear it.

In the Tages-Anzeiger Spiele app the same games come with an archive, statistics and a leaderboard. On the website the daily grid is free without a subscription.

It suits German-speaking puzzle fans and anyone who likes short deduction grids in the style of Sudoku or Tents.

  4. Place every ship so the row and column counts match and no two ships touch, even diagonally.

Tips

  • Fill rows and columns with a 0 with water first.
  • Every cell around a placed ship, including the corners, must be water.
  • Place the longest ship early: it usually fits in only a few rows or columns.
