Word Ladder is a free browser word game on itch.io. Each day everyone gets the same pair of four-letter words, and you change one letter at a time, always making a real word, until the start word becomes the goal. When you finish it shows how your number of moves compares with the shortest ladder.
About Word Ladder (anthonydeganijr)
Word Ladder is a small word game that runs in the browser on itch.io. It plays the old word ladder puzzle: you are given a start word and a goal word of four letters, and you climb from one to the other by changing one letter per step.
Every word along the way must be in the game's word list, and you cannot use the same word twice. Your ladder builds up on screen with the changed letter marked at each step, and the goal word sits at the top. You get three hints per puzzle and a Restart button if a route is going nowhere.
The page says there is one shared daily puzzle for everyone. The game picks the day's pair from the date, and each daily puzzle needs between four and seven steps at best. When you reach the goal it tells you how many moves you used against the shortest possible ladder and gives you a short result to copy, with the date, the two words and a row of squares. A day streak counts the days you solve it in a row.
Once the daily is done you can play as many random puzzles as you like with the New Puzzle button. There is no account and nothing to download, and the page offers an optional daily reminder.
How to play Word Ladder (anthonydeganijr)
- Open the game on its itch.io page; the goal word is shown at the top and your start word below it.
- Type a four-letter word that differs from the last word by exactly one letter and press Go.
- Keep adding words, each a real word you have not used yet, until you type the goal word.
- Use a hint (three per puzzle) or Restart if you get stuck.
- Compare your moves with the shortest ladder and copy your result to share.

Tips
- Look at which letters the start and goal words already share; those can often stay put.
- Vowels are the hardest letters to swap in four-letter words, so change them early when you can.
- If a letter will not move directly, a detour through a different vowel can open the way.
- Every daily puzzle can be done in four to seven moves, so a much longer ladder means a shorter route exists.
