Anagramish

Anagramish board: start word WHACK in blue at the top, end word OFTEN in orange at the bottom and four empty rows between, with a coloured keyboard below

Anagramish is a daily five-letter word ladder. Each step must be a real word that differs from the last by exactly one letter, and the letters can be rearranged as you go, so every rung is part ladder and part anagram.

About Anagramish

Anagramish gives you two five-letter words each day: a blue start word at the top of the board and an orange end word at the bottom. Your job is to fill the rows between them with real words, each one a single letter away from the word above it.

The twist is in its name: the letters may appear in any order. CAULK can become LACKS, which can become SHACK, so a step can swap one letter and reshuffle the rest at once. The keyboard colours the start word's letters blue and the end word's orange, which helps you see what still has to change.

Normal mode lets you bring in letters from outside both words when you are stuck. Hard mode fixes the ladder at four words between start and end, and each row may use only start and end letters, adding exactly one more orange letter each time. A Practice mode and a History of earlier puzzles sit beside the daily board, and a finished ladder shows your time, word count and mistakes to share.

How to play Anagramish

  1. Read the blue start word at the top and the orange end word at the bottom.
  2. Type a five-letter word in the next row that keeps four letters of the word above, in any order, and changes one.
  3. Repeat until your last word is one letter away from the end word.
  4. Try Hard mode for a fixed four-word ladder that may use only start and end letters.

Tips

  • Work from both ends: think which words are one letter away from the end word.
  • Bring in an orange letter at each step so the ladder stays short.
  • Rearranging is free, so ignore letter positions and think of the five letters as a set.

Questions

Do the letters have to stay in place?

No. Each new word must differ by exactly one letter, but the letters can be in any order.

Can I play earlier puzzles?

Yes. The History section keeps past days, and Practice gives extra ladders.
