Every day: One dated pair of start and target words each morning, the same for every player, with leaderboards ranked by how few steps you used. New puzzle: Every morning (a new dated puzzle each day; the site does not state the hour).

doublet is a daily word ladder from morning coffee games. You get a start word and a target word and link them with a chain of real words, changing, adding, removing or rearranging letters at each step. Shorter ladders score better on the leaderboard.
About doublet (morning coffee games)
doublet takes its name from the word ladder puzzle, and morning coffee games publishes a new one every morning, dated on the page. You see two words, for example windy at the top and still at the bottom, with an empty box between them. Your job is to fill the gap with real words, each one step from the last.
A step can be any of four moves: change one letter (head to bead), add a letter anywhere (hose to house), take one out (chat to cat) or rearrange all the letters into a new word (silent to listen). Every word must have at least three letters, and no word can appear twice. Being allowed to add, remove and shuffle letters makes routes possible that a strict one-letter ladder would not allow.
You can build from either end. A word you type joins whichever end of the ladder it is one move from, so you can work down from the start and up from the target and meet in the middle. There is no single right answer: any valid chain solves the puzzle, and the leaderboard counts how many steps you used. A timer runs as you play, a hint is there if you are stuck, and past puzzles are in the archive.
The game is free with no ads and no account needed, and sits beside the site's sudoku, star battle and other daily puzzles. It suits players who like word ladders and want a bit more freedom in the moves.
How to play doublet (morning coffee games)
- Read the day's start word at the top and the target word at the bottom.
- Type a word that is one move from either end: change a letter, add one, remove one or rearrange them all.
- Press Enter; a valid word joins the end it connects to.
- Keep adding words from both ends until the two halves meet.
- Use as few steps as you can: the leaderboard counts them.

Tips
- Drop to three or four letter words early: short words have far more neighbours than long ones.
- Work from both ends and look for a short word that is one step from each side.
- Remember the scramble move: an anagram can jump a long way in a single step.
- The cross beside a word removes it and the steps after it, so you can try another route without starting over.
