subwords (morning coffee games)
Rate itTrace words through a 5x5 letter grid and climb to five stars.
Every day: A new 5x5 letter board every day, the same for everyone, with its own five star score targets. New puzzle: Midnight Pacific Time.

subwords is the morning coffee games word puzzle: a 5x5 grid of letters where you trace words through touching tiles, Boggle-style. Tiles carry point values and word multipliers, so where a word runs matters, and each day's board sets five star targets to reach.
About subwords (morning coffee games)
subwords is one of the puzzles on morning coffee games, a small site of daily puzzles that also has sudoku, star battle and others. Each morning brings a new dated board of 25 letter tiles, and everyone plays the same one.
You make words by moving from a letter to any of its eight neighbours, diagonals included, without using the same tile twice. Words need three letters or more, and proper nouns and abbreviations do not count. Some tiles show a point value in the corner, and some carry a 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier for the whole word. A word's score is the sum of its tile values, multiplied by every multiplier it crosses, and the game always gives you the best-scoring route for a word however you drew it.
There is no single answer. A board holds hundreds of words, and your score is the total of the ones you find. Five stars sit along the score bar, set from the words that board holds, and reaching the fifth finishes the puzzle. A wrong word costs nothing, a hint button helps when you stall, and an archive holds past boards.
It is free with no ads and no account needed, and suits players who like Boggle but want to think about routes and multipliers rather than race a clock.
How to play subwords (morning coffee games)
- Open subwords to see the day's 5x5 board of letters.
- Drag across touching letters, diagonals included, to trace a word of three letters or more, then lift to submit (you can also tap or type).
- Check the line above the board for the word's score; tiles add their values and multipliers multiply the total.
- Keep finding words to raise your score along the star bar.
- Reach the fifth star to finish the day's puzzle.

Tips
- Find the 5x tile first and look for the longest word you can run through it.
- Chain two multipliers: a path through a 3x and a 2x scores six times its letters.
- After a word lands, try its plural and endings such as -ED, -ER and -ING: each counts as a new word.
- Grow short words into longer ones, which keep the multipliers the short word had.
Questions
When does a new subwords board come out?
Every day at midnight Pacific Time.
Is there a time limit?
No. A clock shows how long you take, but you can keep finding words until you reach five stars.
Do wrong words cost points?
No. A word that does not count says why and nothing is taken off.
Can I play older boards?
Yes. The archive keeps past puzzles.
