Shiftwords, by IDBProductions, was published on itch.io in October 2026. You drag a path across touching tiles, including diagonals, to spell words of three letters or more. A countdown runs above the board, and when it reaches zero one line of the 5x5 grid slides. A panel shows which row or column will move next and in which direction, so you can plan the next word before the shift arrives.

Each word you bank before the shift grows your chain and raises a multiplier of up to 6x, and a word landed in the final second scores double. Miss a whole cycle without banking and the board takes one of your three links; lose all three and the run is over. The board is not random in how it moves: it picks the slide that does the most damage to the word you are holding. Every sixth shift rebuilds the board, rare letters such as J, Q, X and Z pay more, and three power-ups (Hold, Peek and Reverse) are earned by chaining.

The daily mode gives everyone the same letters each day, with one attempt and three links, and ends with a result card you can paste anywhere. A Classic mode is there for unlimited runs. Both are free with no energy system, ads or account. A one-off Supporter Pack adds an archive of past daily boards, a practice mode with other board sizes and a zen option, tile themes and longer stats.

The game runs in the browser on desktop, tablet and phone, with an 80,000-word dictionary built in and a reduced-motion option. It suits players who like Boggle-style word grids but want a clock and a board that fights back.

How to play Shiftwords

1. Open Shiftwords on itch.io and choose the daily board.
2. Drag across touching tiles, sideways, up, down or diagonally, to spell a word of three letters or more.
3. Release to bank the word before the countdown ends and the next line slides.
4. Check the Next Shift panel to see which row or column moves and plan your next word.
5. Keep banking each cycle to protect your three links; when they are gone, copy your result card.

• Hold two words in mind: the one you are banking and one that will survive the coming slide.
• A word banked in the final second scores double, but missing the window costs a link.
• Long chains raise the multiplier, so steady short words can beat one risky long word.
• Save Reverse or Hold for a slide that would break your best word.
