Coil

Build a chain of words where each one shares one more letter with the last.

Every day: One seed word a day, the same for everyone (chosen from a fixed list by the day number counted from 10 May 2026), from which you build a word chain; the daily leaderboard ranks chain length, then score. New puzzle: Midnight, local time on your device.

Coil is a daily word-chain game. Everyone starts from the same seed word, and each word you play must share one more letter with the previous word than the last step did: one letter, then two, then three. The chain ends when you cannot find a word in time, and the day's leaderboard ranks the longest chains.

About Coil

Coil starts each day with one seed word, such as GUITAR, shown above an empty row. Your first word has to share at least one letter with the seed; your second must share at least two letters with your first; the third at least three with the second, and so on. Repeated letters only count once, each word can only be played once per game, and the keyboard highlights the letters of the previous word so you can see what to reuse.

Turns are timed once you type your first letter, so the chain is a race against the clock as well as the dictionary. Longer words score more and make the next turn easier, because they leave spare letters to share. Your score is base points multiplied by a bank that grows as you play, with bonuses for playing a word that reuses every letter of the previous one and for reaching many distinct letters across the chain. Powerups such as Rewind, Freeze, Hint and Wildcard are earned through play and streaks.

The daily board ranks players by chain length with score as the tie-break, and there are all-time boards for longest chain and highest score. A Free Play mode is endless for practice. You can play without an account; a free one syncs your name, streak and chains across devices.

How to play Coil

  1. Read the day's seed word at the top of the screen.
  2. Type a word that shares at least one letter with the seed; the row turns green when the word can be played.
  3. Each next word must share one more letter with the word before it than the last step did.
  4. Keep going before the turn timer runs out; use earned powerups like Rewind or Hint if you get stuck.
  5. When the chain ends, check your length and score on the daily leaderboard.

Tips

  • Play long words early: they leave more letters to share on the later, harder steps.
  • Common letters like E, S, T and R keep the most options open.
  • Watch the highlighted keys, they show exactly which letters the next word can reuse.
  • A word that reuses every letter of the previous one earns a bonus, so look for anagrams plus extra letters.

Questions

Is it the same puzzle for everyone?

Yes. The seed word is picked from a fixed list by the date, so all players start from the same word that day, and the daily leaderboard compares them.

Is it timed?

Yes. Turns are timed, starting from the moment you type your first letter.

Do repeated letters count twice?

No. Each letter counts once per word when checking shared letters.

Can I keep playing after the daily?

Yes. Free Play is endless and has its own all-time boards.
