Wirdle on Scots Online

A Wirdle board with the guesses GLAUR and WHILE and the solved word AIPLE in green tiles

Wirdle is a daily Wordle in the Scots language, hosted by Scots Online. Everyone gets the same five-letter Scots word each day and has six guesses to find it, with the instructions themselves written in Scots.

About Wirdle (Scots)

Wirdle is the Scots Online version of the daily word game, built from an open-source Wordle clone and running since March 2022. The share text puts it simply: guess the hidden wird within six shotties, and a new tickler is at hand each day.

Everything is in Scots, rules included. Each shottie (guess) must be a valid five-letter Scots word; press Enter and the kisties (tiles) change colour. Green means the letter is in the wird and in the richt kistie, yellow means it is in the wird but in the wrang kistie, and grey means it is not in the wird at all. The answers are Scots words, so knowing Scots spelling helps more than knowing English.

The word is picked by date, so everyone gets the same one, and after a game you can copy a spoiler-free result and see how long until the next wird. Scots Online also runs a Scots dictionary and reader on the same site, handy for checking a word after you play.

It suits Scots speakers and anyone learning or curious about the language.

How to play Wirdle (Scots)

  1. Open the Wirdle page on scots-online.org.
  2. Type a five-letter Scots word and chap (press) Enter.
  3. Read the kisties: green for the right letter in the right place, yellow for the right letter in the wrong place, grey for a letter not in the word.
  4. Find the wird within six shotties and come back the next day.

Tips

  • Think in Scots spelling: forms such as aw, ee and ch turn up where English would use other letters.
  • The Scots Online dictionary on the same site is useful for learning the words after you play.
  • Use your second shottie on fresh letters rather than repeating the first.
