Hulihua

The Hulihua board: an empty five-by-six grid with the short Hawaiian keyboard of vowels with and without kahakō, h, k, l, m, n, p, w and the ʻokina

Hulihua is a daily word game in Hawaiian ("He Nane ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi", a Hawaiian-language puzzle). Every player gets the same five-letter Hawaiian word each day and six tries to find it.

About Hulihua

Hulihua is a Hawaiian version of Wordle made by Keola Donaghy. The page title calls it "He Nane ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi", a Hawaiian-language puzzle, and the about box says it is an open-source clone of Wordle adapted to Hawaiian, built on Hannah Park's open-source code and the AnyLanguage-Wordle project, which helps people make Wordle in other languages.

Hawaiian has a small alphabet of five vowels and eight consonants, plus the ʻokina (glottal stop) and long vowels marked with a kahakō, so the keyboard is short. You type five-letter Hawaiian words; the tiles show letters in the right place, letters in the word elsewhere, and letters not in it.

The word is picked by date, counting from 1 January 2022, so all players get the same word and it changes at midnight.

It suits Hawaiian speakers and learners who want a short daily practice in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.

How to play Hulihua

  1. Open hulihua.net.
  2. Type a five-letter Hawaiian word and press Enter.
  3. Read the tiles: green for the right letter in the right place, yellow for a letter that is in the word elsewhere, grey for a letter not in the word.
  4. Find the word within six tries and come back the next day for a new one.

Tips

  • With only thirteen letters in the alphabet, vowels repeat often; do not rule out a double vowel.
  • The ʻokina and long vowels count as letters of their own.
  • Use your second guess on consonants you have not tried.
