Whodunit?

The Whodunit? title card: the game's name and the words A game of mystery on a dark case-file card

Whodunit? gives you one written murder mystery a day. You read the scene, search the suspects and locations for clues as often as you like, then write your answers to the case questions; judges review your accusation and give you one more try if you miss.

About Whodunit?

Whodunit? is a browser detective game from Apartment 304 whose motto is a case a day keeps the villains at bay. Each day brings a new case for everyone: on the day we looked it was Adrift at Midnight, in which a fiancé is found dead in the engine room of a yacht during its owner's launch party, with a first mate, a chef, a bartender and a socialite among the suspects.

A case has three tabs. Scene sets the stage, and the orientation packet warns that names, places and details all matter. Investigate lists the characters and locations; searching each one turns up clues, and you can search as many as you want before deciding you know enough. Solve asks the case questions, typically who did it, what the weapon was and what the motive was.

The answers are typed in your own words rather than picked from a list, and the game asks you to be specific. Judges review your accusation; if you miss the mark you get one more shot. Past cases can be reviewed from the front page.

Where Murdle uses logic grids, Whodunit? reads more like a short detective story, so it suits readers of mysteries who like to build the case themselves.

How to play Whodunit?

  1. Read the orientation packet once to learn how a case works.
  2. Start today's case and read the Scene tab closely.
  3. Open Investigate and search characters and locations for clues, as many as you need.
  4. Go to Solve and type specific answers to each question, such as the killer, the weapon and the motive.
  5. Submit your accusation; if the judges say you missed, you get one more try.

Tips

  • Note who was seen where and when in the scene: alibis and odd absences point to the killer.
  • Search the place where the body was found and the suspects' private rooms before accusing.
  • Be specific in your answers: name the weapon and explain the motive in a full sentence.
