A Daily Detective case in progress: moves and hints counters, the deduction meter and evidence cards

Daily Detective opens a fresh murder mystery every day at midnight UTC. You have ten moves to examine evidence and question the persons of interest, then accuse the killer and name the weapon and motive. Two hints are there if you get stuck.

About Daily Detective

Daily Detective is a browser murder mystery with one case a day. Each case starts with a briefing: the scene, the victim, the cause and time of death as far as they are known, and a list of persons of interest with their roles.

Once you begin the investigation you have ten moves. Each move examines a piece of evidence or puts a question to a suspect, and a notes tab keeps track of what you learn. A deduction meter follows how close you are to the killer, the weapon and the motive, and once each reaches half way you may make your accusation. Two hints are available per case.

The game shows a countdown to the next case, which arrives at midnight UTC, and marks each case with a difficulty such as Easy. Past cases sit in an archive, and a stats page records how you have done.

It suits players who like Clue-style mysteries but want something shorter than a novel and less grid-heavy than a logic puzzle: you choose where to spend your moves, and wasting them on the wrong lead is how cases are lost.

How to play Daily Detective

  1. Read the case briefing: the scene, the victim and the persons of interest.
  2. Press Begin Investigation.
  3. Spend your ten moves examining evidence and questioning suspects, and keep notes as you go.
  4. Watch the deduction meter for suspect, weapon and motive; at 50 percent in each you can accuse.
  5. Make your accusation naming the killer, the weapon and the motive.

Tips

  • Read every suspect's role in the briefing first; it tells you who could reach the evidence.
  • Look at the physical evidence before questioning, so you know what to ask about.
  • Keep the two hints for when the meter stalls rather than using them at the start.
