Trilogy

Trilogy's Level 1: Easy with three lifeline buoys, the words PLAY and KNIFE either side of a question mark, three letter dashes and a guess box

Trilogy is a daily word chain puzzle. You see two words with a gap between them, such as PLAY and KNIFE, and you have three guesses to find the middle word that makes a compound word or common phrase with each. The run climbs in difficulty, and three lifelines across the day fill in letters when you are stuck.

About Trilogy

Trilogy is built on the power of three: a left word, a hidden middle word and a right word. The middle word has to join the left word to make one compound word or common phrase, and join the right word to make another. The game's own example is BACK, GROUND, WATER, which gives background and groundwater.

Under the gap a row of dashes shows how many letters the middle word has. You type a guess and submit it, with three guesses for each chain.

The daily run is made of several levels that start at Easy and get harder. A lifeline buoy fills in one random missing letter of the mystery word, and you have three for your entire daily run, so they have to be shared out across the levels. A timer, your games played and your streaks are kept, and you can share your score.

It suits players who enjoy compound word chains and quick vocabulary puzzles.

How to play Trilogy

  1. Read the left and right words and count the dashes for the middle word.
  2. Think of a word that follows the left word and comes before the right word.
  3. Type your guess and submit; you have three guesses per chain.
  4. Tap a lifeline buoy to fill in a random letter if you are stuck; you have three for the whole day.
  5. Work through the levels, then share your score.

Tips

  • Start from the side that has fewer partners: some words take only a handful of compounds.
  • Say the two pairs out loud; common phrases are often easier to hear than to see.
  • Save lifelines for the harder later levels.
