Tillyflip puzzle with the clue Disney and the words NEMO, SIMBA and MINNIE solved, one word partly revealed

Tillyflip shows a category and five hidden words that fit it. You can spend a life to flip a letter, or type a guess when you think you know a word; wrong guesses also cost a life. Solve all five with your 15 lives to keep your streak, with a new numbered puzzle each day.

About Tillyflip

Tillyflip is a free daily word puzzle played in the browser. Each puzzle has a category, such as car parts or garden birds, and five blank words that belong to it. You see how long each word is, but not its letters.

You start with 15 lives. Pressing the flip button on a word reveals one of its letters and costs a life. When you think you know a word, you fill in the blanks and press Go; a wrong answer costs a life too. Getting a word right earns a free flip that you can spend on any hidden letter of another word, except a first letter.

The puzzle is numbered and changes at midnight UK time, and everyone gets the same category and words. A rating bar at the end shows how well you did, and the archive lists every earlier puzzle by number, date and theme. Replaying old puzzles does not affect your streak.

The interest lies in the trade-off between spending lives on letters and risking an early guess. It suits players who like category puzzles and quick vocabulary games with a little risk.

How to play Tillyflip

  1. Read the day's category and look at the five blank words.
  2. Press the flip button on a word to reveal a letter, at the cost of one life.
  3. When you know a word, fill in the blanks and press Go.
  4. Use the free flip you earn for each correct word on another word.
  5. Solve all five words before your 15 lives run out.

Tips

  • Guess early on short words; a correct guess gives you a free flip for a harder word.
  • Flip letters in the longest word first, since a few letters usually give it away.
  • The first letter cannot be taken with a free flip, so use the category to pin it down.
