BrainBashers Tents for 3 October, 16x16 Medium: a grid dotted with green trees, with tent counts along the top and left edges

Tents on BrainBashers shows a field of trees with a number beside every row and column. You place one tent next to each tree so the counts come out right, and no two tents touch, not even diagonally. Three sizes at two levels arrive every day.

About Tents (BrainBashers)

Tents is a placement puzzle set in a campsite. The grid holds trees, and there are exactly as many tents to place as there are trees. Every tent must sit directly beside its own tree, up, down, left or right, and each tree has exactly one tent of its own, though a tree may happen to stand next to two tents. Tents never touch each other, not even at a corner. The numbers along the top and side say how many tents are in each column and row.

BrainBashers, Kevin Stone's puzzle site, posts 8x8, 12x12 and 16x16 grids at Easy and Medium every day, with a 20x20 weekly special. The play page has check, answer, auto, print and restart buttons, an option to show mistakes and to show how many tents remain in each line, and an optional clock. The help page includes a walkthrough.

Puzzles change at midnight GMT or at the time zone you set, and earlier days remain in the date list for a few weeks. There are no adverts and no account.

It suits anyone who likes Battleships-style counting puzzles; the trees give it a friendly look and the larger grids take a good while.

How to play Tents (BrainBashers)

  1. Open the Daily Tents page and pick a size and level from today's grids.
  2. Click a square next to a tree to place a tent; mark squares you know are empty as grass.
  3. Give every tree exactly one tent beside it, horizontally or vertically.
  4. Match the tent count shown for every row and column, and keep tents from touching, even diagonally.
  5. Check your grid or show the answer; new puzzles come after midnight GMT.

Tips

  • Rows and columns with a 0 are all grass: fill them in first.
  • Any square that is not beside a tree can never hold a tent.
  • Squares around a placed tent, diagonals included, are grass.
  • When a tree has only one free neighbour left, its tent goes there.
