Sortl #128: eight test tubes of coloured layers and one empty tube, with the move counter and par 26

Sortl is Stoop's daily liquid sort puzzle: test tubes stacked with coloured layers and one empty tube to work with. You may only pour onto a matching colour or into an empty tube, and the aim is to sort every tube in as few moves as possible. Each day's numbered puzzle has a par and one attempt.

About Sortl

Sortl is a free daily take on the water sort puzzle, from Stoop, which also makes FlagGuessr, Palette and Bloom. A new numbered puzzle is published every day at midnight UTC, the same for every player.

The board is a row of test tubes, each filled with layers of coloured liquid, plus one or more empty tubes. You click a tube to pick up its top layer and click another to pour it. A layer may only go onto the same colour or into an empty tube, and never past a tube's capacity. When several layers of the same colour sit together at the top, they pour as one move. The puzzle is solved when every tube holds a single colour or is empty.

Scoring is against par, the minimum number of moves the day's puzzle needs. Matching or beating par earns a Flawless Sort; one to three over is a Clean Sort, four to eight a Decent Sort, nine or more a Messy Sort. Undo and restart are there, but there is no replay of the daily puzzle. A separate Levels mode has 240 puzzles in four kinds, Classic, Split, Overflow and Blind Stack, to play at your own pace.

It suits fans of tube and ball sorting games who want the extra pressure of a par and a single shot.

How to play Sortl

  1. Open Sortl and look at the day's tubes, top layer first.
  2. Click a tube to pick up its top layer.
  3. Click another tube to pour it: only onto the same colour or into an empty tube.
  4. Keep pouring until every tube holds one colour or is empty.
  5. Finish in as few moves as you can to match or beat par.

Tips

  • Start with tubes that are one or two moves from being sorted.
  • Treat empty tubes as temporary storage, not just final homes.
  • Pour runs of the same colour together to save moves.
  • Use Undo rather than Restart when you go wrong, since restarting costs more moves.
