Shrooms is a daily star battle puzzle with a forest theme. The grid is split into coloured dirt patches, and you place exactly two mushrooms in every row, every column and every patch, with no two mushrooms touching, not even diagonally. Mushrooms that break a rule turn red, and Medium and Hard grids are there for a bigger challenge.

About Shrooms

Shrooms dresses up the star battle puzzle. The forest grid is divided into coloured regions, or dirt patches, and the solution has exactly two mushrooms in every row, every column and every region. No two mushrooms may touch, including at the corners.

Tap a cell to cycle it through empty, grass and mushroom. Grass is your own marker for squares where nothing can grow; it is optional and never scored. A safe mushroom shows a blue cap, and one that breaks a rule turns red and poisonous. Check tells you how many mushrooms sit where they cannot belong without saying which, and a hint highlights and explains one deduction. A short tutorial board ends in a solve, and Settings offer Medium and Hard puzzles.

Shrooms is one of the daily games on Greatest Games, a site of word and logic puzzles. A new puzzle goes up every day at midnight US Eastern, the same for everyone, and it plays free in the browser with no account or download. A free account opens the Shrooms archive of every past puzzle by date.

How to play Shrooms

  1. Open Shrooms on greatest.games; try the tutorial board if you are new.
  2. Tap a cell to place a mushroom or mark it with grass.
  3. Place exactly two mushrooms in every row, column and colour region.
  4. Keep every mushroom from touching another, even diagonally.
  5. Finish when all are placed with none turning red.

Tips

  • Start with small regions; a patch of three or four cells limits where two mushrooms can go.
  • Mark grass around every mushroom you place; its eight neighbours are ruled out.
  • If two regions share only two rows, those rows' mushrooms all belong to those regions.
  • Use Check to count errors before hunting for them.
