Rough Draft

Rank six athletes by the day's stat, with one shot to get the order right.

Every day: One ranking board a day, the same for everyone: six athletes and a stat, from career numbers to pop culture clout, and one shot to put them in order from highest to lowest. New puzzle: Midnight US Eastern time (the game keys each board to the America/New_York date).

Rough Draft is a daily sports ranking game from Hindsight Games. Each day it names a stat and six athletes, and you arrange them from highest to lowest and lock in your board once. Exact positions score 2 points, one spot off scores 1, and you get a grade and a comparison with the day's other players.

About Rough Draft

Rough Draft asks one question a day: put these six athletes in order. The stat changes every day and can be anything from career numbers to off-field measures such as earnings or pop culture clout. You see the six names and fill six slots from highest to lowest.

You tap an empty slot or a player to place them, rearrange until you are happy, and then lock in your board. There is only one official attempt per day; after that the board is locked, though you can still experiment with the order for fun. Scoring is per position: 2 points for an athlete in exactly the right place, 1 point for one spot off, and nothing otherwise. Ties in the stat count either way.

After you lock in you get a draft grade, a scouting report on your picks, the share of players you beat that day, and a short note on the answers, such as how career earnings compare across eras. The game is styled as a front office war room, with the jokes to match.

Rough Draft is made by Hindsight Games, a small independent studio run by Ben Ringel, which also makes the daily history game Yearbook and the sports connections game Roster Relay.

How to play Rough Draft

  1. Open Rough Draft and read the day's stat and the six athletes.
  2. Tap a slot or a player to place them, arranging all six from highest to lowest.
  3. Lock in your board when you are ready; you get one official attempt a day.
  4. See your score, grade and how you compare with other players, then share it.

Tips

  • Place the athlete you are surest of at the top or bottom first, then fit the rest around them.
  • One spot off still scores, so when unsure between two places, choose the middle ground.
  • Think about era: career totals favour long careers, and earnings favour recent players.
  • Read the stat carefully: a career number and a single-season number can order the same players very differently.

Questions

How many tries do I get?

How is it scored?

2 points for each athlete in the exact position, 1 point for one spot off, 0 otherwise.

When is there a new board?

Each day; the game uses the US Eastern date, so it changes at midnight Eastern time.

Who makes Rough Draft?

Hindsight Games, the independent studio of Ben Ringel, which also makes Yearbook and Roster Relay.
