Read the Tape

The Read the Tape card: UP and DOWN buttons, a row of result squares and a candlestick chart

Read the Tape is a daily chart-reading game. Each day deals five real S&P 500 charts with the ticker and dates hidden, and you call whether each will be up or down over the next five sessions, staking your confidence from a paper bonus pool. Your daily P&L is scored and shareable.

About Read the Tape

Read the Tape deals five charts at midnight UTC, and every player gets the same five. Each is a real historical chart of an S&P 500 stock, with the company's ticker, the dates and the five trading sessions that followed all hidden.

For each chart you call UP or DOWN for the next five sessions, and you also decide how sure you are by staking a share of a paper bonus pool. Calls are scored with a Brier-style confidence score, so being confidently wrong costs more than a cautious miss. After the call the hidden future is revealed along with the name of the stock.

Your results are compared with the crowd and with a Monkey Index of random calls, and you can share your daily P&L as a row of coloured squares. It is free with no sign-up.

It suits anyone curious whether they can read a price chart, from market followers to players who just enjoy calibrated guessing.

How to play Read the Tape

  1. Look at the first hidden chart.
  2. Call UP or DOWN for the next five sessions.
  3. Stake your share of the paper bonus pool to show how confident you are.
  4. See the real outcome and the stock's name, then move to the next chart.
  5. After five charts, compare your P&L with the crowd and share it.

Tips

  • Stake small when a chart could go either way; confidence scoring punishes overconfidence.
  • Look at the trend and the last few candles rather than one big move.
  • Check the Monkey Index: beating random is the first goal.
